In the (Academic) Zone
Jacqui Sadashige, Lecturer, Critical Writing
Athletes speak of being “in the zone”; practitioners of meditation and yoga aim to dissolve the boundaries between the self, the body, and the universe. Is there a way to translate these states to the academic “life of the mind?” Delve into some rituals, practices, and exercises advocated by mind-body enthusiasts and see if they make a difference this semester! Wear comfortable clothing.

International Development at Penn - *New Proseminar Addition*
Ronald Daniels, Provost of the University of Pennsylvania
Bono, Bill Gates, Angelina Jolie - international development is hotter than ever, but what is it really about? What's the substance behind the publicity, how can you get involved, and how does it connect to Penn's mission of "global engagement" and such vital issues as human rights, environmental protection, health care, education, and disaster preparedness? Learn more about this critical area from one of the world's leading experts: Penn's provost, Ronald J. Daniels, Professor of Law and the university's chief academic officer. Provost Daniels is a scholar of such areas as law and economics, public policy, lessons from 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, and the challenges of building strong laws and legal institutions in Africa, Latin America, and Central and Eastern Europe. He will also discuss Penn's initiatives in international development and suggest specific ways you can get involved.
