Digital Special Effects for Movies
*(This Proseminar Has Been Cancelled)*

Norman Badler, Professor of Computer and Information Science
Contemporary motion pictures often use a wide range of digital techniques for special effects to create or recreate an illusion of reality. These techniques, based on computer graphics principles, can be seamlessly integrated with live-action and location shots. We will discuss various techniques such as compositing, modeling, virtual sets, face animation, virtual doubles, and crowd synthesis to see how computation and computer graphics together with skilled animators can work visual wonders.

Enter the Palace: Nigeria's Benin Kingdom
Kathy Curnow, Visiting Lecturer
Before the British invasion of 1897, West Africa's Benin Kingdom had been a powerful presence for over 500 years. At its center was the palace-home to the king, his harem, and hundreds of courtiers. Thousands of bronzes, ivories and other art works formed the backdrop for elaborate ceremonies-and some of these works are now on campus. We'll look at contemporary palace life and how it illuminates past art and cultural traditions.

What it Means to be a Neurologist and a Painter
Sami Khella, MD, Clinical Associate Professor in Neurology
As a neurologist, I see diseases of the brain, manifesting as amazing stories. As a painter I create my own fantastic world. I would be happy to share seemingly disparate, yet fairly parallel worlds with my students. It is expected that the students would in turn share their own amazing tales.
