Transfer Student Orientation

August 29 - September 13, 2007

Dear Transfer Student,
Welcome to Penn, our home … and now your new one! As coordinators of this year’s Transfer Orientation Program – and as transfer students ourselves (Jeff and Nik from NYU, Ali from Tulane) – we know the years ahead will be some of the most memorable you’ve experienced. We also know it’s a difficult transition, leaving behind friends who are sad to see you go, while you set out in a bold new direction.

Transfer Orientation will help you make this big transition. The three of us, along with fifteen other transfer students and the staff of Penn’s New Student Orientation, have planned a week of special events, from August 29 through September 4. These programs, which are social, cultural, academic in nature, will help you get to know Penn, Philadelphia, and one another.

Before you get here, spend some time this summer checking out Pennster at www.pennster.com, Penn’s fun and informative social network for new students. Here, transfer students, freshmen and some experienced upperclass students can mingle and ask questions about Penn, the city of Philadelphia and anything else of common interest. While you’re at it, check out this website, which contains contact information for each of the four undergraduate schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Nursing and Wharton.

We also know that transferring your academic credits is something you’ll want to hear more about. In most cases, this is possible, but it will take some preparatory work on your part. At Penn, this process differs a little from school to school and department to department, but in general for each course you want to transfer, you’ll need to present the syllabus, as well as papers, tests and any other relevant course information. So extinguish that bonfire you just lit with those final exams, and make sure you bring them along! (Don’t worry – we have a session during Orientation that will help you with this process.)

Orientation starts August 29, so don’t be late! When you arrive, come to the Welcome Center in Houston Hall, and we’ll take it from there. You’ll find that Penn students love being here and will want to share their enthusiasm with you.

Meanwhile, don’t hesitate to email any of us, whether you want to ask questions or just say hello!

Yours truly,
