Frequently Asked Questions

NSO 2007 > Arriving at Penn > Frequently Asked Questions

When do I move in?
Move-In for first year students is scheduled for Thursday, August 30, 2007 between 9am and 5pm. Early Move-In is available at an additional charge on Wednesday, August 29. If you have any further questions about the move-in process, contact Housing and Conference Services.

When will I get full information about orientation?
A guide for Penn families with general information about NSO will be mailed in mid-July. Information about pre-orientation programs will also be mailed to students over the course of the summer, and is accessible via the Internet, as well. Finally, a full calendar of events will be distributed to students upon their arrival to campus, but you may also check this site periodically over the summer for updated information.

What pre-orientation programs are available and how may I obtain more information about them?
Several of Penn's departments offer pre-orientation programs to introduce new students to campus life and traditions prior to official orientation programs. Information about these programs will be mailed by the individual departments over the course of the summer; however, applications and information are also available on the web. To access information on PennQuest, PennArts, PennCORP, and PENNacle, visit the Office of Student Life's Pre-Orientation page. For information on the PENNCAP/Pre-Freshman Program, contact Access and Achievement Programs.

Do I have to go to all of the orientation events?
The mandatory events will be clearly labeled in the Calendar of Events you will receive upon your arrival to campus. However, a variety of non-mandatory events, including social and cultural programming, are extremely important to ease your adjustment to the Penn and Philadelphia communities. Once classes begin, you will not have this type of opportunity again to meet new people or to learn about the many resources available to you as a student.

How long should my family stay? What events can they attend?
On official move-in day, Thursday, August 30, activities for families will take place between 12pm and 6pm. All activities after this time are for students only; families are strongly encouraged to depart on Thursday evening to allow students to adjust to their new surroundings.

What hotel accommodations are available for my family during move-in?
See our Families page for hotel information.

What should I bring with me to campus?
For this and more information about moving to Penn, see the Moving In section of the NSO website or Housing and Conference Services' move-in page.

When is the best time to purchase books and where?
Although you may want to purchase your books during your free time throughout orientation week, it is sometimes better to wait until you receive your course syllabi. Most books and course materials will be available in the following places:

• Penn Bookstore: 3601 Walnut Street
• House of Our Own: 3920 Spruce Street
• Penn Book Center: 130 S. 34th Street
• Wharton Reprographics: Steinberg Hall-Dietrich Hall, Ground Floor
• Campus Copy Center: 3907 Walnut Street
• Towne Copy Center: 220 S. 33rd Street

When do classes begin?
Classes begin on Wednesday, September 5, 2007.
