Year of Evolution

The University of Pennsylvania, in partnership with many of the city's scientific and cultural institutions, is sponsoring The Year of Evolution, in honor of the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin.

In addition to the Penn Reading Project, Penn will be sponsoring many different events this school year. A full events calendar will be kept here, so keep checking back!

  02/11/09 Penn Humanities Forum: Changing Your Mind About Love  
    Just in time for Valentine's Day - find out what love means to the human heart and mind. Guest speaker is Amy Bloom, author of "Love Invents Us."  
       
  02/12/09 Finding Darwin's God  
    Dr. Kenneth Miller discusses his best selling book "Finding Darwin's God: A Scientists Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution." This is one of the tentpole events of the Year of Evolution and sure to be extremely thought provoking..  
       
  02/12/09 Darwin's Legacy in 21st Century Biology: A Symposium  
    This two day colloquium begins February 12, 2009, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the originator of the modern theory of evolution of species by means of natural selection. Darwin’s theory is the foundation of all modern biology. The invited speakers provide a comprehensive Darwinian and historical framework for current theoretical and empirical research. As such, the symposium emphasizes how the work of Charles Darwin continues to inspire biology in the 21st century and beyond.

    Celebrate Darwin's 200th Birthday at Penn Museum with short ''teach in'' talks, films, gallery tours, plus birthday cake and badminton with Darwin. An annual event at the Penn Museum that is always a lot of fun!
 
       
  02/18/09 Ocean Explorers: Dialogue on the Fate of Our World's Oceans  
    The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine is hosting a symposium dedicated to the critical issue of marine species conservation. This event is sponsored by the Special Species Club, EcoVet, and the International Veterinary Student Association.

    Stephen Greenblatt, author of "Will in the World", examines how William Shakespeare sparked an evolution of the written and performed word.
