DAHLAK

fogo

"Ethiopian and Eritrean dining in cozy atmosphere."

To the sound of Ethiopian music, guests are directed to tables and chairs or short, vinyl stools surrounding a circular, sunken table. The latter is the traditional African setting made to accommodate multiple diners sharing communal food.

Lamb, chicken and beef form the basis of many meals, but there is also a heavy emphasis on vegetables like lentils, chickpeas, string beans, okra and mushrooms. Berbere, a hot-as-hell spice combo comparable to curry, is a mixture of chili powder and everything from turmeric to cloves, and is a signature ingredient in Dahlak’s entrées. Each dish served at the low-to-the-ground tables is large enough to be eaten by a party of two or three, offering a communal dining experience. Injera, a spongy flatbread made from teff flour, is used as both a plate and a utensil; its breaking represents the cultural significance of the meal.
