International Programs

For Faculty

Faculty who travel abroad for educational or other purposes affiliated with Penn, should review the following steps to prepare for their trip:

  • Make sure that you have a valid passport. If you currently have a passport, and the expiration date falls within six months of the end date of the abroad program you must renew your passport now.  Check visa requirements for the country you will be visiting to see if a visa is required. For information on visas or other entry requirements for a specific country, please go to the Entry/Exit Requirements section in the Country Specific Information provided on the U.S. Department of State travel website. See information for non-US citizens in the Practical Penn Abroad: Know Before You Go.

  • Contact your health insurance provider to ensure that you will be covered adequately during your time abroad. If you are not covered sufficiently, it will be necessary to purchase additional health insurance (see Practical Penn Abroad: Know Before You Go  for questions to ask your insurance provider about coverage and for information about possible providers of international insurance coverage). This is essential to ensure that you are covered in the case of any medical needs you may have overseas. You should also check to see if additional vaccinations and medications are required for your trip by reviewing the relevant health information at the CDC website. If you need vaccinations, travel medications, or additional advice about travel health, contact Penn Travel Medicine.

  • Register with International SOS (Penn Membership Number: 11BSGC000012) Through International SOS, Penn provides members of the Penn community who travel abroad on a Penn-affiliated activity, 24-hour worldwide assistance and emergency evacuation services. This includes pre-trip planning advice, access to country-specific travel/health/safety/security information, and in-country medical and personal assistance. Please keep in mind that this is not health insurance but does provide for medical evacuation and repatriation. After entering your Penn Membership Number to the bottom right side of the web page under Personal Locator to the link called “add trip.” Please include the details of your trip. Registering will allow you to receive the fastest emergency response. This information will only be accessed in the case of an emergency. Print and carry your ISOS card with you.

  • Register your travel with the US State Department. Registration allows you to record information about your upcoming trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an emergency. Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Be sure to read the country-specific information provided by the US State Department.

For more detailed information about many of the steps described above, as well as more detailed information for preparing to travel abroad, please see Practical Penn Abroad: Know before You Go.

Also, be sure to follow Penn’s guidelines for international travel.
