Study Abroad Perspective

1st Place: Carnival
- Location: Port-of-Spain, Trinidad
- Description: This is Carnival. I'm in
the middle of one of the larger "bands." To the left there
are trucks, one full of hundred pound speakers, another with
food, another with alcoholic beverages, and the last full
of porta-potties, then the trucks repeat. This part of Carnival
lasts for 2 days and some people "play mas," dancing around
the city for 12-14 hours in the hot sun.

3rd Place: Awaiting Destiny
- Location: Flat Rock, Southern Queensland,
Australia
- Description: Ever since I was a child
I had dreamed of surfing Australia, and now I was faced with
the opportunity to engage some of the best yet most dangerous
surfing conditions in the world. Standing on the rocks about
to paddle out into the unknown one can only imagine the speed
and strength of my heartbeat. It turned out to be one of
the greatest days of my 21 year life.

1st Place: Road to Freedom
- Location: Benjamin Franklin Parkway
- Description: Walking down flags-lined
Benjamin Franklin Parkway reminds me of the respect America
has for every country, race, culture and religion. The road
to freedom is long, but America has accomplished it, and
beckons to the world to follow in her footsteps, albeit with
unnecessary force sometimes.

2nd Place: Participant
- Location: John Kerry rally at Penn
- Description: I took this picture on September
24, 2004, during Senator John Kerry's rally at the University
of Pennsylvania. This little girl came to the rally with
her mother. She probably did not understand what was going
on in the crowds, nor would she have her own political view,
but she was nevertheless encouraged to participate. At that
moment, I understood what it means to be a citizen in a nation
of democracy - every member, no matter how young or old,
strong or powerless, has the right and responsibility to
voice his or her opinion and contribute to the well-being
of the society.
