Samples of Syllabi Statements re: Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity

The work you submit in this class is expected to be your own. If you submit work that has been copied without attribution from some published or unpublished source, or that has been prepared by someone other than you, or that in any way misrepresents somebody else's work as your own, you will face severe discipline by the university.

Regrading of midterm examinations: Requests for regrading of midterm examinations are due no later than the day one week after examinations have been returned and must be directed to Dr. Roberts.

This deadline is real. No examinations will be accepted for regrades after it passes.

To submit a regrade request, you must submit your examination along with a separate piece of paper that includes the correct answer to the question and a written statement as to why your answer should be regraded. Do not mark or make notes on your examination and do not alter in any way the answers to questions for which you are requesting a regrade. Such alteration will be taken as a violation of the Code of Academic Integrity. Answer keys will be posted in the Chemistry Building and will be available for photocopying in the Chemistry Library.

Academic Integrity

The University of Pennsylvania Academic Code of Integrity states:

Any work that a student undertakes as part of progress toward a degree or certification must be the student's own, unless the relevant instructor specifies otherwise. That work may include examinations, whether oral or written, oral presentations, laboratory exercises, papers, reports, and other written assignments.

Plagiarism, use or performance of another person's work, misconduct during an examination, prior possession of an examination, and submission of work previously used are violations of the Code. Any student who violates this Code will receive zero points for the work in question and will be referred to the Judicial Inquiry Officer for further action. If you are caught, you are in really big trouble! You will run the risk of ruining your college career through possible dismissal from school. That said, you are encouraged to discuss cases and debug code/spreadsheets with other students. However, under no circumstance should you copy any part of another student's file to your own file, no matter how small; no matter how you intend to alter it later!

Academic Integrity

May I remind you that your work and conduct will be held accountable under the University of Pennsylvania's Code of Academic Integrity. Violations of this Code will be met with swift and certain punishment up to the full extent of the regulation.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

I am as concerned as you are about maintaining the highest standards of academic propriety; and I expect all work you submit to me to be strictly your own. I welcome your suggestions about improving the learning environment in this course.

Plagiarism

According to the Policies and Procedures Handbook of the University of Pennsylvania, using the ideas, data, or language of another without specific and proper acknowledgement constitutes plagiarism. If you are at all unsure about the appropriate form of acknowledgement in a particular situation, it is your responsibility, as stated in Penn's Code of Academic Integrity, to consult with the instructor to clarify any ambiguities. Plagiarism in any assignment will result in a failing grade for that assignment, and may result in further disciplinary action, which may include receiving a failing grade for the course.

Academic Integrity:

We encourage full group and class collaboration on all aspects of this course. It is almost impossible to share too much information in product development. However two qualifications are important:

First, there are several individual assignments in the course. These are intended to be low-key exercises to deepen your understanding of the key concepts in the course. While you may collaborate on these assignments, our expectation is that the final preparation of this work will be done individually.

Second, while we do expect that all team members will contribute substantially to the project efforts, some students will choose to devote themselves to the projects beyond what is required for the course. Unfortunately, one or more teams may also experience a "free rider" problem in which a team member contributes almost nothing to the project effort. We view such behavior as violating our expectations for active participation in the course. However, we will not generally intervene if such a situation arises. Sometimes these situations arise because of dysfunctional group dynamics, which we hope you will struggle with, resolve, and learn from. Sometimes these situations arise because of dysfunctional individual behavior, which we hope you will learn from, but which you may not be able to remedy in any substantial way.
