BURL ON BALD CYPRESS - Sometimes trees exhibit excess division of woody cells to cause a large knot to form on a branch or even the main trunk.  The cause of burls remains unexplained.  There is nothing to be done about burls except to watch for possible decay if the burl splits.  The branch may have to be removed if splitting or decay occurs.
