The architectural style of Collegiate Gothic was born quietly in the 1870's and ultimately mastered by childhood playmates, Walter Cope and John Stewardson. The twins seen here appear in the Quadrangle Dormitories designed by the famed architectural firm of Cope & Stewardson in 1895.

Gargoyles were originally designed to serve as rainspouts. They later became strictly ornamental and assumed many forms. While the girl in this picture is perched on a ledge, gargoyles can be found virtually everywhere both on the exterior and interior of structures.
