ABOUT

Social science research reveals that while the nation’s cities are the engines of the U.S. economy today, key economic, demographic and environmental/physical issues threaten their ability to maintain this role in the future. Addressing these concerns require repositioning the metropolis in the federal agenda.

This conference discussed the latest social science research on the nation’s cities and suburbs and highlighted current research that outlines the trends, identifies the problems and frames areas for federal response.

During Friday’s sessions urban research experts presented new research on trends in the urban economic, demographic, residential, social and political environment to serve as the basis for a special volume of The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science on how these forces are transforming the American city.  Saturday's conversation on the New American City and Public Policy featured journalists Chris Matthews and Howard Finemann, Penn faculty and editors of The Daily Pennsylvanian.
