INSTRUCTION
Preparing the next generation of thinkers, doers, and scholars
Penn IUR seeks to provide new opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to enrich their exploration of the urban experience in the classroom and the field. Our programs for academic instruction include: the Undergraduate Urban Research Course, the Master of Urban Spatial Analytics, and the Penn Urban Doctoral Symposium.
Undergraduate Urban Research Course
Penn IUR is currently sponsoring the Undergraduate Urban Research Course (UURC). This innovative research program pairs faculty conducting urban-focused scholarship with undergraduates that have an interest in developing research skills in a semester-long, credit-bearing seminar. The course is cross-listed course between PennDesign’s department of City and Regional Planning and the School of Arts and Science’s Urban Studies program.
The course will be offered in Spring 2008, and research will be supported by grant funding. Faculty and students interested in this course should submit a proposal no later than November 2, 2007. To download the Request for Proposals, please click here. For more information about this course contact Kendra Goldbas at 215-573-8386, or kendrag@pobox.upenn.edu.
Master of Urban Spatial Analytics
A new program at the University of Pennsylvania provides an important opportunity for future leaders who wish to apply spatial technology solutions to business and public sector decision-making. The Master of Urban Spatial Analytics (MUSA) program:
- offers professionals, current doctoral students and recent college graduates the chance to earn a pioneering degree in one of the country's fastest growing knowledge-based fields
- provides instruction in urbanism with training in place-based analytical techniques, including GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, geo-database management, and computer-based modeling.
The skill set developed through this program will be useful in a wide variety of fields, ranging from housing analysis to epidemiology. For more information on the MUSA program, please contact Kendra Goldbas at 215-573-8386, or at kendrag@pobox.upenn.edu. You can also find more information by visiting the MUSA website.
Penn Urban Doctoral Symposium
Prior to the May graduation, Penn IUR, in collaboration with the Urban Studies program, hosts the Penn Urban Doctoral Symposium highlighting the work of Penn doctoral students who had completed dissertations on urban-focused topics. The event increases awareness among participants of recent urban research and also exposes aspiring doctoral candidates to the scope of contemporary urban questions addressed at Penn. Every May, Penn IUR convenes graduating PhDs and is exploring ways of increasing dialogue among doctoral candidates (and their advisors) earlier in their careers.
