| 2007 CONFERENCE SUMMARY |
|
Unspoken Borders: Perspective on Race and Design ignited a discourse centered on the issues facing people of color within the disciplines of architecture, city planning, fine arts, historic preservation, and landscape architecture. Held from March 30-31, the two-day conference included plenary sessions, two keynote speakers, bus tours and workshops, all of which exposed students and professionals alike to a greater awareness of the effects of design on minority communities. Keynote speakers, Walter Hood and Mitchell Silver, delivered rich and informative lectures and the plenary sessions Creating Equity in the Profession and Incorporating Diversity in Design Practice stimulated attendees. The conference reflected on approaches toward breaking the barriers within design and further diversifying the professions. Conference attendees walked away with a deeper understanding of the major issues relating to race and design. The conference was a true success and Unspoken Borders 2008 will expand upon the discussion by reaching more issues and a wider populace. |
