Penn Food Vendor to Host ‘Eat Local Challenge’ to Support Local Food Sources, Promote Healthy Eating
September 28, 2009

WHO: Bon Appétit Management Co., food vendor at the University of Pennsylvania, and Penn students.

WHAT: The Eat Local Challenge

WHEN: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept.29

WHERE: Dining halls at 1920 Commons, 3800 Locust Walk; Hill House, 3333 Walnut St., and Kings Court English House, 3465 Sansom St.

DETAILS: Bon Appétit’s “Eat Local Challenge” will offer meals made from 100 percent local food products, all grown or, in the case of fish, caught within 150 miles of the University. The event is an effort to educate students on the diversity of regional culinary offerings, as well as encourage wholesome nutrition and support of local food sources.

The ingredients for Penn’s menu include fish from the ocean off the New Jersey coast and local streams, sweet corn, butternut squash, beets, buckwheat pasta tossed with local mushrooms, chicken, potatoes, Swiss chard, fruit, apple relish, spinach, Pennsylvania cheddar and chives. The only exception to the local rule is salt.

Additional information about the Eat Local Challenge is available at www.bamco.com/page/25/eat-local-challenge.htm.
