NEWS BRIEFS

Trivia for the 242nd

Jimmy Carter is the third U.S. president to address graduating students here. FDR spoke in 1940 and Gerald Ford spoke in 1975. First Ladies Barbara Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke in 1990 and 1993, respectively.

Seven honorary degrees and 5,143 sweat-of-your-brow diplomas were awarded this year.

For the first time ever, the College of General Studies awarded Master of Bioethics degrees -- two to be exact.

Another first: Engineering doctoral students had their own graduation program.

And he's off

The celebrity racehorse that placed fourth in the Kentucky Derby departed the Vet School's New Bolton Center last week, after surgery there for a fractured left leg. Hallory Hunter, who attracted fans offering cards, flowers, and even carrots during his brief stay, is at Belmont Park in New York, recuperating, probably for a post-racing life as a stud.

Wharton collects

The largest single donation ever made to a business school went to Wharton this month. Jon M. Huntsman (W'59), CEO of the Huntsman Corp., donated $40 million to be used at Wharton's discretion.

A member of Wharton's Board of Overseers and a former Penn trustee, Huntsman heads the largest privately held chemical company in the United States.

Two years ago, the Huntsman family donated $10 million to endow an innovative Wharton-SAS undergraduate program that integrated international studies, foreign language and business education.
