Passage to Italy

New York-based photographer Liana Miuccio, whose work has been featured in numerous U.S. and Italian periodicals, spent much of 1996 traveling through her ancestral homeland, meeting her Italian relatives and documenting how one family keeps its cultural traditions alive in both the old country and the new. The photographic exhibit "An Italian Journey," which includes this photograph of Miuccio's great-uncle Giovanni in his hometown of Limina, Sicily, documents her search for her ancestral roots. "An Italian Journey" opens Friday, Sept. 18, at the University of Pennsylvania Museum, 33rd and Spruce streets, and continues through Jan. 6, 1999. The river giveth, the river taketh away

The snow melts, the river rises. The rains come, the river reclaims the land around it. The river recedes, leaving a changed landscape in its wake. Anuradha Mathur, assistant professor of landscape architecture and regional planning, explores this timeless process and how it has shaped the Mississippi River basin through map prints, photographs and paintings in her exhibit "Mississippi Horizons," on display in the Lower Gallery of Meyerson Hall, 210 S. 34th St., through Oct. 9.
