CAMPUS BUZZBY SANDY SMITH Rodin for president in 2008? Hey, it could happen. At least the White House Project hopes it might - or if it's not Judith Rodin who gets elected president of the United States in that year, it's some other, equally deserving woman. The project, an affiliate of the Ms. Foundation, included Rodin on its ballot of 20 female "presidential nominees" chosen for their demonstrated leadership abilities. Readers of Parade magazine Sept. 17 were asked to vote for up to five candidates of their choice; you can vote on-line at or call 1-900-288-6881 ($1.50 per call). You want more b-ball? You got it! The Athletic Department struck a deal that, while boosting its bottom line, means no football games on WXPN this fall. Instead, Quaker football fans can catch the action on WVCH (740 AM) in Chester, simulcast on Doylestown's WBUX (1470 AM). 'XPN remains committed to carrying Penn sports, though: instead of football, the station will air about 30 Quaker basketball games, starting in November. Back home again: Urban Outfitters returned to the neighborhood of its birth quietly last week as Sansom Common's newest tenant...Hitting the trail: Meanwhile, outdoor retailer Eastern Mountain Sports has agreed to open a store in the complex, replacing previously sought tenant City Sports, which scaled back its expansion plans. The new store will be EMS' second area outlet. Where the water buffalo roam: History professor (and passionate libertarian) Alan Charles Kors and attorney (and passionate civil libertarian) Harvey Silverglate have applied another strong dose of sunlight to continued attempts to suppress free speech on college campuses in their new book, "The Shadow University" (Free Press, 1998). In addition to describing ongoing efforts to squelch certain types of disagreeable utterances, the authors also explain how these efforts arose in the first place. Lunch leftovers: In covering which trucks and carts moved off the old familiar streets, we left out the street vending zone on the west side of 38th Street between Walnut and Spruce. Five trucks are currently operating on that stretch. From north to south, they are: Yue Kee Mobile Kitchen (from 36th and Sansom), Lanh's and Kimsen Chinese Food (both from the 3600 block of Walnut), KC's Chuckwagon (one-half block south of its original site) and Bui's Lunch Truck (from the 3600 block of Spruce). Penn in ink: Professor of Dermatology James Leyden shared a dirty little secret with the readers of the October issue of Discover: because so many bacteria hide under fingernails, thousands remain on our hands even after 10 or 15 washings..In an October Essence article, Law Professor Regina Austin suggested that black women seeking wealth needed to understand the modern capitalist economy better...And legal studies professor Kenneth Shropshire was quoted in a Sept. 21 Sports Illustrated article on the soaring prices for professional sports franchises.
