A Gothic Revival revival
Were it not for the work of British architect Lewis Nockalls Cottingham (1787-1847), whose Great Chesterford School in Essex (1846) is shown here, College Hall and other 19th-century Gothic Revival buildings might not have been built. Cottingham's work has languished in obscurity for some time, but a new exhibition at the Arthur Ross Gallery through March 21 restores him to his rightful place as one of the leading champions of the Gothic Revival, which replaced classicism as the dominant architectural form in both Britain and America. The Arthur Ross Gallery is located in the Fisher Fine Arts Library, 220 S. 34th St. Gallery hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Info: 898-2083.
