CONFERENCE CALL


The American Indian art market is the subject of a symposium Nov. 6 at the University of Pennsylvania Museum. Speakers from around the country will look at the differing perspectives that artists, dealers and collectors brought to the market, the active role that Indian peoples played as producers and entrepreneurs, and the demands and expectations of consumers. The cost is $75 for general admittance and $60 for Museum members. For more information, call 215-898-4890.

The Math Department’s Centennial Celebration will be at College Hall Oct. 30. The daylong event will feature internationally distinguished scientists Cathleen Synge Morawetz, Bert Vogelstein, George E. Andrews and Freeman J. Dyson presenting topics such as “Mathematical Proof and Major Changes to Be Expected in Applied Mathematics” and “Biomedical Research at the Millennium.” Morning and afternoon sessions are free and open to the public. The Fifth Annual Writers’ Conference at Penn on Nov. 13 will feature Philadelphia Magazine editor-in-chief and Penn alum Stephen Fried as the keynote speaker. The conference, cosponsored by the College of General Studies, Kelly Writers House and Penn Humanities Forum, includes morning and afternoon workshops and individual critique sessions. Invasive exotic plants is the topic of a conference at the Morris Arboretum Nov. 3 and 4 presented by the Arboretum and the Nature Conservancy of Pennsylvania and cosponsored by the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore College, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.
