CAMPUS BUZZ

BY SANDY SMITH

’Cliffe dweller: Your Buzz columnist (Harvard ’80) gets a little annoyed when his alma mater snatches away one of Penn’s best. That said, congratulations are nonetheless in order for Annenberg Professor of History and Women’s Studies Program Director Drew Faust, who has been named the first dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. The institute, which specializes in the academic study of women, was created after Radcliffe College was merged into its bigger brother last year.

Grillin’ in the garden: The owners of Chestnut Hill’s Solaris Grille are expanding — to the grounds of the Morris Arboretum. Solaris partners John Anderson and Tim Bonnie will open a satellite operation in the Arboretum’s Widener Visitor Center on April 30, featuring light snacks, salads, sandwiches, burgers and beverages, along with a children’s menu. The Solaris Cafe at the Arboretum will serve lunch from April 30 to Oct. 31 each year, and special picnic dinners will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from June 21 to Sept. 21.

Nice chunk of change: Who said a penny isn’t worth anything? Students, faculty and staff across campus dropped $2,000 worth of them into collection jugs in dining halls, offices and classroom buildings, making this year’s Penn VIPS Penny Drive a success and giving Caring About Sharing a much-needed helping hand. The little things indeed add up.

Going for the record books: If you missed the Penny Drive and you’re a member of the Class of 2000, you still have a chance to contribute to something worthwhile. This year’s Senior Class Gift Drive aims to raise $20,000 from the graduating class to build a landscaped walk at the east end of Perelman Quadrangle. At press time, the drive had already broken the all-time contribution record of $17,851 set by the Class of 1998; gift chair Brett Wertheimer (W’00) also hopes his classmates will break the participation record of 497 set by the Class of 1994. Donations are being accepted through May 14; e-mail brett33@wharton.upenn.edu or call 215-417-5435 for information.

Buzz wonders: Whether repairing the long-broken Provost’s Tower clock is part of the ongoing Quadrangle renovation project…What happened to the Funderberg Information Center? Last we looked, it had been closed off from the transit stop waiting area…What all that kitchen equipment was doing on Moravian Court behind the former Le Boulet recently. Would it be too much to hope for a LeBus revival?

Penn in ink: “Every society needs segment-making media and society-making media,” Shayon Professor of Communications Joseph Turow told a Louisiana State University audience. “But the digital, interactive world provides less opportunity for society-making media to take root.” Turow’s LSU speech warning of the Internet’s balkanizing effect was reported in the Baton Rouge Advocate April 6.
