May 4, 2000 AWARDS & HONORS Two Guggenheims, 11 Fulbrights Among 182 scholars and artists designated to receive this year’s John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships are Penn faculty members Hai-Lung Dai, Ph.D., Professor and Chairman of Chemistry, who will study chemical reaction control, and Robert Blair St. George, Ph.D., Professor of Folklore and Folklife, who will study the spoken language and oral poetics in early New England. Eleven Fulbrights — for starters Penn students selected for international study grants as Fulbright Fellows this spring include, in the graduate division: David Haney, Architecture, who will study in Germany; Bruce Baird, East Asian Languages and Literature, in Japan; Solimar Otero, Folklore and Folklife, in Nigeria; Nicholas Sawicki, History of Art, in the Czech Republic; and Jeanne Nugent, History of Art, in Germany Undergraduate Fellows include: Katrin Fraser, Asian and Middle-Eastern Studies, in Korea; Kristina Herbert, Biochemistry/Biophysics, in Germany; Miriam Joffe-Block, Anthropology, in Thailand; Laura E. Robbins, History, in Spain; Adam Kaufman, Management and Technology, in Mexico; and Christopher Murray, Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, in Mexico. About 10 additional Fulbright applications were pending at press time, according to Clare Cowen, advisor for graduate scholarships abroad.
