Conservation while you watch
Efforts to conserve ancient artifacts usually take place out of
the public eye. From now through October, visitors to the University
of Pennsylvania Museums Roman Gallery Tuesday through Friday
will have a rare opportunity to see a conservator at work as she
cleans and repairs seven large Roman and Etruscan sculptures, including
this satyr from the sanctuary of Diana Nemorensis (Roman, 200-100
B.C.). The Museum, 33rd and Spruce streets, is open from 10 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission $5, students $2.50,

Weve got to get ourselves
back to the garden
Just like the greenery in which it is set, the Morris Arboretums
Garden Railway grows a little bit every year, with new structures
joining the parade of historic Philadelphia buildings on display.
Two historic mansions, Mill Grove (foreground) and Lemon Hill (background),
were among the scale models added in 1999; youll have to see
the Garden Railway for yourself to find out whats new this
year. The railway, which will be on display from June 17 to Oct.
10, runs daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays
and Thursdays from June 21 to Sept. 21) at the Arboretum, 100 Northwestern
Ave., Chestnut Hill. Admission $6, seniors $5, students $4, children
