NEWS BRIEFS RecombinationThe University is shifting the supervision of human gene therapy trials from the Institute for Human Gene Therapy to individual scientific investigators and their departments in the Medical School, the University announced last week. The move is a prompt response to suggestions made by an independent review panel of nationally prominent scholars appointed by President Judith Rodin to find ways to strengthen the ethical decision-making in these trials. Other actions include reviewing conflict-of-interest policies and procedures for investigators who might profit or appear to profit from their own research, reviewing ethical decision-making specific to all research using humans, and creating an Institutional Review Board with special expertise in evaluating gene therapy. Share the roadRejoice, bi-pedalers of the species. The streets are getting safer for you, thanks to some new bike lanes, some no-right-on-red signs and some pedestrian crossing signals. The lanes are on Walnut, Market and 33rd streets. After some street work, Chestnut will also get bike lanes. During rush hour, cars and bicycles share the right hand lane on Walnut between 34th and 38th streets, with bicyclists having the right of way. A similar arrangement is coming on Chestnut Street. Were thrilled, but our mothers didnt raise any stupid kids, so we intend to keep our helmets tightly fastened. ExposedAlumna Mary Ellen Mark (CGS62, ASC64,Hon94) is exhibiting her photographs at the Philadelphia Art Museum in the first major solo showing of her work. Mark was voted the Most Influential Woman Photographer of All Time by readers of American Photo magazine in 1998. Her images of the American scene, from Coney Island to Daytona, capture the sad, the funny and the shocking, including images of a family living in a car, the exploits of Miami gigolos, spring-break revelers, cross-dressers and trick-or-treaters.
