APPOINTMENTS
Strumpf new interim dean
of Nursing

Neville
E. Strumpf, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, whose research prompted a nationwide
reduction in the use of restraints on the frail elderly in nursing homes,
has been named interim Dean of Penns School of Nursing, effective
Sept. 1.
Strumpf, the Edith Clemmer Steinbright Professor in
Gerontology and Director of the Center for Gerontologic Nursing Science,
has headed Penns Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program since 1985
and helped carry the program to the number one spot in 1998 and 2000 U.S.
News & World Report rankings. She received the Christian R. and
Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1985.
In the nursing world, Strumpf is best known for her
long-running research with Lois Evans, D.N.Sc., RN, FAAN, Viola MacInnes/Independence
Professor in Nursing, on the use of restraints in hospitals and nursing
homes. Their research has netted them numerous prestigious nursing awards.
Dr. Strumpf is highly regarded by her peers as
a scholar and leader, said Evans. She will be an effective
interim dean.
I am especially pleased that a scholar in gerontologic
nursing has been selected for this role.
Barry
Hilts, MBA, has been named Associate Vice President, Facilities Operations
as of July 1, after serving as Director of Operations for the Division
of Facilities Services for a year. Hilts will be responsible for the operations
and maintenance of University facilities.
Mina
Fader (WG89) has been named Associate Vice President, Facilities
Finance, after serving as Financial Director for the Division of Facilities
Services. Fader will oversee the financial operations of the division
and the financial aspects of the Universitys capital program.
Sam
Lundquist was named Assistant Vice President for Development effective
Sept. 1. Lundquist, who has been a senior administrator at Wharton since
1992, will use his business and technical know-how to organize and update
Penns fundraising activities and the Development Office as a whole.
Patricia
Brennan, M.A., was named the new Director of Special Services for
the Penn Police Department as of Aug. 15. Brennan, who has been serving
as Interim Director for the past year, has been a senior investigator
and detective supervisor with the Penn police, a Philadelphia police officer,
and a detective in the citys elite homicide unit. As Director of
Special Services, she coordinates support services for victims of crime,
directs responses to emergencies, and develops programs in crime prevention
and community outreach.
Franklin
Allen and Richard Herring have been named Co-Directors of the
Wharton Financial Institutions Center, replacing new Philadelphia Federal
Reserve Bank head Anthony Santomero (see related story, Q &A,
page 4). Allen, D.Phil., Nipon Life Professor of Finance and Economics,
served as Vice Dean and Director of Wharton Doctoral Programs. Herring,
Ph.D., Jacob Safra Professor of International Banking and a professor
of finance, served as Vice Dean and Director of Wharton Undergraduate
Division.
College House faculty masters
Linda
P. Brown (GrEd85), the Miriam L. Stirl Professor in Nutrition
and Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School
of Nursing, will assume leadership of Community House.
Arnold
J. (Skip) Rosoff, J.D., Professor of Legal Studies and Health Care,
Systems in the Wharton School, will be heading up Goldberg College House.
Mark
Y. Liberman, Ph.D., Trustee Professor of Phonetics, will move into
Ware College House.
Jay
Reise (G75), Professor of Music Composition, will move to Hamilton
College House.
Walter
Licht, Ph.D., Professor of History, will serve as Interim Master for
Hill College House while current Master James ODonnell takes a year
off to teach at Yale.
