CAMPUS BUZZ BY SANDY SMITH Well miss you, Boss: By the time you read this, Director of Communications Ken Wildes will have cleaned out his desk in 200 Sansom East. While the people he worked for will probably remember him most for the steady and calm way in which he shepherded reporters through the minefields whenever a crisis occurred on campus, we at the Current will remember him most for something else, namely, this publication, which he nursed from idea to reality. Best of luck wherever your plans take you, Ken. Literary Studio 54: If indeed it ever was, the Kelly Writers House is no longer a well-kept secret on campus now that its snared a Best of Philly from Philadelphia magazine. In its annual August awards issue, the mag tagged the Writers House as the best reading series in town. Your Buzz correspondent guesses that its only a matter of time until the Writers House sports velvet ropes and a bouncer. Campus culinary roundup: While you werent looking, Eat at Joes, the much-hyped diner-themed eatery, closed quietly June 30. Managing Director of Real Estate Tom Lussenhop assures Buzz that the next occupant of the space will be someone who knows how to run an actual diner The upscaled greasy spoon formerly known as Billybobs is also shuttered now. Nothing definite yet on its next incarnation Also closing: Café Bon Appétit in International House, after lunch on Sept. 1. Bon Appétit fans will find the same approach to fast food at their new eateries, The Bistro and Houston Market. Theyre set to open in Houston Hall in September...Get ready for the Pod to land on campus. Thats the name of the new Stephen Starr restaurant set to open at the end of September in Sansom Common. The food will be Japanese-influenced, as will the décor somewhat: think Godzilla-meets-George Jetson Work is now under way on Pizza Rustica, the new pizzeria at 36th and Chestnut set to open later this fall...And last but not least, Papaya King, the hot-dog emporium Seinfeld made famous, will open its first outlet outside New York next month in Hamilton Village Shops on 40th Street later next month.
Penn in ink: Blame Hillary Clinton for ending Vice President Al Gores brief stint as an alpha male. [Gore] occupies the feminine position because Hillary is aggressively moving into political life, Professor of Political Science Anne Norton said in an August 14 Montreal Gazette story on how the vice presidency and Hillarys Senate run have actually left Gore in a poor position to claim the big prize Italy, long a source of emigrants, now finds itself a destination for immigrants, and its not happy playing host. Nor is the rest of Europe. In a Washington Post story July 23 on how immigration has produced a nationalist backlash in much of Europe, Sociology Professor Doug Massey said that the European Unions reliance on symbolic, yet highly repressive anti-immigration policies has produced the worst of all possible worlds: continuing immigration combined with lower wages, poorer working conditions, increased crime, more disease and greater social marginalization.
