CAMPUS BUZZ

BY SANDY SMITH

Bigger fish, smaller pond: President Judith Rodin’s right-hand man, Chief of Staff Steven Schutt, is off to run a college of his own. He’ll be leaving Penn at the end of June to assume the presidency of Lake Forest College, a small (1,200 students) private liberal-arts college just north of Chicago. While at Penn, Schutt played a major role in shaping and advancing the Agenda for Excellence, Penn’s master plan. We wish him success as he goes to shape the future of Lake Forest.

Phillylympics 2016? Don’t laugh — this city might have what it takes to host an Olympic Games. But first it needs to make sure that it has or can build facilities that meet the International Olympic Committee’s requirements. To perform this assessment, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau has turned to Legal Studies Professor and Chair Kenneth Shropshire, a noted authority on sports facilities, who will head the panel charged with the task. An initial report is expected in April.

More late-night news: Now that El Diner’s open and Pronto! in Houston Hall is serving late-night fare, Chats’ reason for being has more or less disappeared. So Dining Services has transformed the former late-night eatery in 1920 Commons into a study hall, Commons Study, open from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. For those who want a snack while they study, the facility is equipped with vending machines.

Talk to us: The Penn Public Talk Project is sponsoring a series of open-ended PennTalks discussions this spring on current hot topics in the college houses. Unfortunately, your Buzz correspondent got the info too late to drop in on the first one (“The ‘Survivor’ Phenomenon”), but the ones coming up are equally stimulating: “African Americans in Politics,” in DuBois Feb. 19, “Electoral vs. Popular Vote — What Should Win?” in Hill (date to be announced), “Third Parties in America” in Ware Feb. 21, “Medical Ethics” in Spruce March 7 and “Balancing College and Life” in Harnwell March 20. All discussions start at 7 p.m.

If it’s Thursday, it must be... time for dinner out in University City. Okay, so it’s one day late to take your Valentine out, but if he/she was patient, the two of you can take advantage of lovely discounts on dinner at some of the neighborhood’s finest restaurants as part of the ongoing “Go West! 3rd Thursdays” campaign. This month, the Academic Bistro at Drexel’s Culinary Academy and Pizza Rustica join the list of participating establishments. Visit www.gowest.org/events/3rd_thursdays.html for a complete list and more info.

Penn in ink: An Associated Press story Feb. 3 compared California’s botch of electric deregulation to Pennsylvania’s success thus far. While critics fret that Pennsylvania consumers may suffer once rate caps are removed, at least one customer is pleased — Assistant Professor of Pharmacology Patrick Loll, who said, “Frankly, I was worried that the same sort of slamming that took place with telephone service might occur, but that hasn’t come about.”
