NEWS BRIEFS

Over the top

Thanks to the generosity of faculty and staff across campus, the Penn’s Way 2001 campaign has exceeded its fundraising goal of $350,000. As of Feb. 2, 1,809 Penn employees had pledged a total of $374,253 to Penn’s Way charities, seven percent more than the goal. The number of people who pledged this year was up eight percent over last year’s figure; last year, 1,679 people contributed a total of $388,298 to the campaign.

Keep it down

Sure, it’s about saving money. But the recently-announced University energy conservation effort is also about being responsible stewards of limited resources, according to Facilities Services Director Omar Blaik. The Division of Facilities Services has had energy-conservation plans in the works since last summer, Blaik said, but decided to expedite its winter conservation strategy in the wake of recent sharp increases in energy costs. Key measures include turning thermostats down to 65 degrees in occupied rooms and 59 degrees in unoccupied ones and switching off electronic equipment that does not need to be kept running. The Jan. 30 Almanac has the complete list of recommendations.

Techno-chair

Mayor John Street has chosen President Judith Rodin to head a new city agency charged with attracting high-tech businesses to town. Rodin will chair the New Economy Development Alliance’s board, which will include leaders of area colleges, universities and technology companies. The alliance aims to leverage the city’s knowledge resources as a lure to bring technology companies and research-oriented businesses to open shop in Philadelphia. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Rodin will be personally involved in recruiting firms to the city and encouraging new firms to tap into local health and technology research.
