CAMPUS BUZZ

BY SANDY SMITH

Asian sensation I: There’s a reason why the University Symphony Orchestra’s concert March 29 featured a Beijing Opera soprano performing modern Chinese operas. Sun Ping’s guest appearance serves as a prelude to the symphony’s own upcoming tour of China, which will include performances in May at the 2001 Beijing Arts Festival (at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Culture), at Tsinghua University and in Hong Kong. What’s more, the symphony will be in China at the same time as the Philadelphia Orchestra, who will be touring Asia from May 21 to June 12.

Asian sensation II: The Global Fusion counter at Houston Market has revamped its Asian offerings to feature pan-Asian cuisine. The new “Exotic Asia” menu items, which replace Vietnamese and Indian dishes, include Japanese tonkatsu (lightly breaded pork tenders with ginger sauce), Singapore chicken satay (grilled sweet and spicy skewered chicken), spicy Korean beef strips with chile-sesame sauce, and Buddhist Delight (tofu with mixed stir-fried vegetables), served over sticky rice or noodles. Prices range from $4.50 to $5.75. Your Buzz correspondent recommends them highly.

Call for safety: Got a cell phone that you no longer need or use? Penn Volunteers in Public Service could use it. They’re currently conducting a cell-phone donation drive to benefit Women Against Abuse. The phones, which will be distributed to women at risk of abuse, will be programmed so they can automatically dial 911 and a non-emergency number such as a shelter at the touch of a button. As of press time, 55 phones have already been given to the city Health Department for donation to WAA. The drive continues through April. For more information, call Winnie Smart-Mapp at 215-898-6612 or Isabel Mapp at 215-898-2020.

Design for dining: Stephen Starr’s Sansom Common eatery, Pod, is in rare company now. The retro-futuristic Japanese restaurant is one of three restaurants across the country nominated for the 2001 James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Restaurant Design. (The other two are New York’s redesigned Russian Tea Room and Saladang Song in Pasadena, Calif.) The winner will be announced at the James Beard Foundation’s annual awards ceremony in New York April 30.

Penn in ink: Recent graduates seeking jobs are finding that their alma maters are still there to support them in the hunt. The Wall Street Journal March 20 reported that Penn’s career services office periodically sends recent grads e-mail with job information and networking opportunities. “We are best able to help our young graduates because someone with 20 years of experience is going to go to a headhunter,” Director of Career Services Patricia Rose told the paper...In a March 3 Dallas Morning News story, Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunications David Farber called long-promised high-speed home Internet access “one of [new FCC Chairman] Mike Powell’s biggest problems.”
