CAMPUS BUZZ BY SANDY SMITH We need to talk to our kids : An event as traumatic as the Sept. 11 attack remains with a person forever. And it will take a good long while for most of us to return to normal if indeed we ever do. If it takes us grownups years to make sense of such an event, imagine what our children must be thinking. Human Resources has materials on its Web site, www.hr.upenn.edu, that can help staffers talk to their young children and teenagers about such trauma along with a list of common reactions to traumatic events. and maybe we need to talk ourselves: Just a reminder if you are having trouble coping with the aftermath of Sept. 11, or just want a shoulder to lean on, the PENN-Friends Employee Assistance Program is here for you. The program staff are trained to help you cope with stressful situations that may affect your job performance as well as other life issues. To set up an appointment with an intake counselor, call 1-888-321-4433. Brother, can you spare a buck? As they did during the Gulf War and the 1993 Midwest floods, the staff of Student Financial Services are pulling together to assist the volunteers working to find missing persons and clear away the rubble at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Theyve established a central drop-off point in Room 212, Franklin Building, where you can donate cash or supplies for use by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. www.upenn.edu/emergencyinfosite/brotherlylove.html has complete information on whats needed for Operation Brotherly Love. If you have questions, call Yvonne Giorgio in Student Financial Services at 215-898-4210. Shifting landscape at UCD: To fill Paul Steinkes shoes, the University City District has turned to a man with deep roots in the neighborhood. Landscape architect Eric Goldstein, currently the UCDs director of capital programs and planning, has been named the districts new executive director effective Oct. 15. In his current post, Goldstein has been closely involved with a number of projects, including streetscape improvements on 40th Street, Clark Park renewal, the LUCY shuttle and the districts strategic plan. Penn in ink: Democrats are annoyed at a Republican verbal tic their habit of using Democrat as an adjective instead of Democratic. And well the Dems should be, on grammatical and symbolic grounds, Annenberg School Dean Kathleen Hall Jamieson said in a Sept. 2 Dallas Morning News story on the practice. Democrat is not an adjective. Democrat Party puts two nouns together, which is at best inelegant and at worst a gratuitous insult. Kentucky fertility specialist Panayotis Zavos sees himself in the company of Galileo with his vow to clone humans within two years. Glenn McGee, associate director of the Center for Bioethics, begs to differ. Dr. Zavos is the best argument for regulating human cloning, he told The Atlanta Constitution Aug. 21. What hes demonstrated is that all it really takes to get the world very concerned about cloning is a lot of chutzpah. |
