Raise the banner

The University’s new requirements for special-events banners on campus seek to preserve the urban park character of College Green.

For permission to hang a banner, contact the Facilities Services Call Center at 215-898-7208 or workreq@pobox.upenn.edu. All requests require your office’s 26-digit budget code.

Banner cables across the 3600 block of Locust Walk require reservations up to a year in advance.

Banners on public streets may only be mounted on city street lights. Requestors may commission a custom design, subject to approval by the Office of the University Architect and Philadelphia Art Commission, or use a standard layout template.

Banners on buildings are not encouraged and require a typed or e-mail request along with a dimensioned sketch of the proposed banner, the location on the building where the banner goes and the dates it will hang. Hanging banners on or between trees is not permitted.

Money for Medicine

Penn Medicine recently got a big vote of confidence with a $100 million endowment from the Philadelphia Health Care Trust, a nonprofit charitable foundation. PHCT Chairman Bernard Korman said the endowment, which will be transferred entirely to Penn in 2009, represents “the most productive use” of the Trust’s assets.

Licensed to earn

Penn makes another top 10 list, ranking seventh nationally in the Association of University Technology Managers’ survey of technology transfer activity for fiscal year 2000. The University earned $26.5 million in income from licensing of Penn-developed technologies, submitted 165 patent applications on faculty research and formed six start-up companies. AUTM collects data on licensing activities from U.S. and Canadian academic institutions.
