Research published in 1998 by Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Flaura K. Winston (right) and colleagues at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has led to a device that promises to prevent serious injury in bike accidents—collapsible handlebars designed by Kristy Arbogast (left) of Children’s Hospital with assistance from students in Penn’s Engineering School. The device has been patented; the designers stated that it would be at least a year before it turns up on the handlebars of children’s bikes sold in stores.
