Arthur Ross
Gallery
Associate Professor of Fine Arts Terry Adkins explores the art and
thought of W.E.B. DuBois, a 20th-century intellectual giant, in
Darkwater: A Recital in Four Dominions. The exhibit,
on display at the Arthur Ross Gallery through March 2, juxtaposes
the political and romantic aspects of this famous activist and sociologist
using four mediasculpture, print, document and music/text.
Located at 220 S. 34th St., in the historic building designed by
Frank Furness, Penns free gallery showcases art and artifacts
from the Universitys collections and elsewhere.

Penn Presents
Just added to this years Penn Presents schedule is The
Guys, a new play that looks back at Sept. 11 through the eyes
of journalist Joan (Cynthia Ettinger), who has agreed to help a
fire captain (Brent Brinkley) compose eulogies for the comrades
he lost in the World Trade Center collapse. Written by Anne Nelson
and produced by Tim Robbins The Actors Gang, The
Guys makes its Philadelphia debut March 4 through March 9
at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St.
The event is just one of more than 170 performances showcased by
Penn Presents each year.

University
of Pennsylvania Museum
Usher in the Year of the Sheep with the University of Pennsylvania
Museums 22nd annual World Cultures Family Day: Chinese New
Year Celebration. The Jan. 25 day-long extravaganza will feature
workshops for children, storytelling, arts and crafts, martial
and healing arts demonstrations and dance performances. A Lion
Dance and Firecracker Parade cap off the event. The Museum, located
at 3260 South St., has promoted the study and understanding of
human history and diversity for more than a century.

Institute
of Contemporary Art
A leading advocate for the works of living artists, the Institute
of Contemporary Art presents more than 40 paintings based on geometric
abstraction and Op Art by local artist and legend Edna Andrade.
Andrade uses simple shapes and colors to create complex paintings
based on abstract design. Edna Andrade: Optical Paintings,
1963-1986, which runs from Jan. 18 to April 6, is her largest
one-person museum show. An exhibition walkthrough, led by the artist
and guest curator Debra Bricker Balken, and opening reception take
place Jan. 17 at the ICA, located at 118 S. 36th St.

Department
of Music
Enjoy a spring evening concert with the all-female Cassatt String
Quartet, Penns string quartet in residence. The Manhattan-based
group, which has performed throughout North America, Europe, and
the Far East, graces the stage at Amado Recital Hall, Irvine Auditorium,
3401 Spruce St., March 19. Looking for more Music Department events?
Your choices range from symphonic scores performed by the University
Wind Ensemble to inspiring vocals by the University Choir.
