NEWS BRIEFS Semper FranMen’s Basketball Coach Fran Dunphy can add a Marine citation to his resume—the Sportsman Award from the Philadelphia chapter of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. The award, presented April 26, recognized Dunphy’s skill as a strategist and leader. “Throughout his career, Fran Dunphy has shown the type of qualities to which Marines are taught to aspire,” his citation read. Dunphy was honored for his 14 years at the helm of the Quaker men’s basketball team, which has won eight Ivy League titles on his watch. Murals onlineThe walls now talk back. We’re talking about the 2,500 walls decorated with murals found all over Philadelphia. You can now get background data on the city’s murals in addition to artist’s bios and photographs by visiting a new web site created by Penn’s Cartographic Modeling Laboratory. The site allows searches for murals by theme, artist’s name, ZIP code or year of completion. In partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Recreation’s Mural Arts Program, the project is part of Penn’s Neighborhood Information System, an initiative that focuses on vacant properties and neighborhood change in Philadelphia. Find the site at www.cml.upenn.edu/murals. Award securedPenn is doing its part to safeguard the nation’s information infrastructure, according to the National Security Agency, which has just designated the University as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Education. The three-year designation recognizes Penn as a national leader in training students for careers in computer security. In addition to the honor, Penn is now eligible for certain scholarships and grants through the Department of Defense and other agencies within the federal government. The University is one of 30 centers nationwide to receive the award. |
