“Scientia Intuitiva” (1995) by Candace diCarlo

Let’s be frank here: We’re biased. We’ve been fans of Candace diCarlo, whose photos have graced the overwhelming majority of our front pages since the Current launched five years ago, for quite some time.

So how could we not tout her 20-year retrospective, “The Body as Evidence,” which opens Oct. 10 at Van Pelt-Dietrich Library? This exhibit shows a side of diCarlo that goes well beyond what you see in these pages. Her artistic photography blends the real and the metaphysical, the permitted and the forbidden. In her words, “These photographs are a record of my understanding of the acceptable and the taboo, my initiation into the sacred and the profane….My work is dedicated to that part of life which is strange and mysterious, unpredictable and incomprehensible.”

— S.S.

“THE BODY AS EVIDENCE”: Oct. 10 through Jan. 27 in Kamin Gallery, Van Pelt-Dietrich Library, 3420 Walnut St. Gallery open during normal library hours.
