Chestnut Hill Modernism
Chestnut Hill as the center of a revolution? Sounds implausible, but in the 1950s and 1960s, Philadelphia’s toniest neighborhood was a hotbed of architectural experiment, culminating in what some have called “the most significant house of the second half of the 20th century”—the house Robert Venturi built for his mother in 1964 (above). “Only Controversial and Not Detrimental,” on display at the Architectural Archives, 220 S. 34th St., through May, celebrates modern design in Chestnut Hill with works by some of the region’s and the world’s best-known architects. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, by appointment weekends.
