See what’s new in youth theater


The 26th edition of the International Showcase of Performing Arts for Young People returns to the Annenberg Center Jan. 21-24.

After the conference attendees finish discussing the effects of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act on arts education Jan. 21, the general public is invited to join the participants in sampling some of the best new performing arts for youth from around the world from Jan. 22 to Jan. 24. The Showcase performances feature 17 new works presented in pairs; the complete schedule appears below. Tickets for each pair of shows are $7 and can be purchased at the Annenberg Center box office, 3680 Walnut St., or by calling 215-898-3900.

Thursday, Jan.22

8:30 to 10 a.m.: Gansanga Dance Company presents “Kaleta: A Children’s Ritual,” a recreation of the West African festival similar to Halloween; singer-songwriter Norman Foote performs songs and humor from his award-winning CD “1000 Pennies.”

10:10 a.m. to noon: Theatreworks USA presents “Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel,” a stage adaptation of the 1939 children’s classic; silent performer Mark Jaster performs movement theater in the style of his master teachers, Marcel Marceau and Etienne Decroux.

3 to 5:15 p.m.: macrobert productions performs Oscar Wilde’s classic story “The Happy Prince”; Lincoln Center invites young audiences to join in the fun with “Reel to Real,” in which vintage films are paired with live audience-participation theater.

Friday, Jan. 23

9 to 10:15 a.m.: South African Sharon Katz brings her multicultural ensemble The Peace Train to the United States; New Jersey’s American Repertory Ballet presents contemporary dance with an edge.

10:20 a.m. to noon: Sing along with Tom Chapin, who critics call “the pied piper of children’s music”; experience traditional Japanese drumming with Portland Taiko.

3 to 5:15 p.m.: Theater Terra of the Netherlands tells tales from Max Velthuijs’ “Frog” series of picture books; Hobey Ford’s award-winning Golden Rod Puppets present “Animalia,” a celebration of the beauty of the animal kingdom.

Saturday, Jan. 24

9 to 10:45 a.m.: Québec’s Théâtre Sans Fil perform Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera “Hansel and Gretel” with puppets and multimedia effects, followed by a real soap opera—Casey Carle’s “Bubblemania.”

10 a.m. to noon: “Bubblemania” opens this double bill, which closes with Mexican rock ’n’ rollers Los Patita de Perro.

3 to 5:15 p.m.: Canada’s Roseneath Theatre Company presents its latest work, “Danny, King of the Basement,” an exploration of homelessness; American Jamie Adkins confronts creative chaos head-on with the audience in “Cirque.”
