Film Festival picks around Penn

From April 8 through the 21, the 13th annual Philadelphia Film Festival brings numerous screenings to downtown theaters and two screens at The Bridge: Cinema de Lux (230 S. 40th St.) and International House (3701 Chestnut St.). This is just a sampling of the 250 international, American, documentary and animation features and shorts screening in West Philadelphia. Friday, April 9: “Control Room” (US/Egypt, 2003), a documentary of the Arab news organization Al Jazzeera filmed during the American takeover of Iraq. 7 p.m. at I-House. Additional screening Tuesday, April 13 at 5 p.m. at I-House.

Saturday, April 10: “Uniform” (China, 2003), a story about a poor factory worker whose life is transformed when he impersonates a cop. 4:45 p.m. at I-House.

Sunday, April 11: “Film as a Subversive Art: Amos Vogel and Cinema 16” (US, 2003), a documentary about avante garde film programmer and writer Amos Vogel, with screenings of related short films. 4 p.m. at I-House.

Monday, April 12: “Grimm” (Netherlands, 2003) is a neo-gothic, postmodern Dutch twist on “Hansel and Gretel.” 5 p.m. at The Bridge Theater 2.

Tuesday, April 13: “The Danube” (Austria, 2003), a political allegory that follows a group of troubled characters on a boat making its final journey. 7:45 p.m. at The Bridge Theater 1.

Wednesday, April 14: “Traveling Light” (Australia, 2003), a coming-of-age story set in the Australian suburbs of the early 1970s, where a young schoolteachers meets a free-spirited musician. 7:30 p.m. at The Bridge Theater 2.
