CONFERENCE CALL

The international bioethics conference on “Going Too Far: Rationalizing Unethical Medical Research in Japan, Germany, and the United States” continues at Penn through May 1. Scholars will discuss how some of the most gruesome experiments of the 20th century—such as the infamous “Nazi doctors” and the Tuskegee Experiment—were rationalized, and what they can teach us today. Speakers include University of Virginia’s Jonathan D. Moreno on “The History and Ethics of Human Experiments for National Security Purposes,” Osaka University’s Miho Ogino on “Reproductive Technologies and the Feminist Dilemma in Japan” and University of Cologne’s Benno Müller-Hill on “The Silence of the Scholars.”
Registration $125 for entire conference or $20 for individual lectures. Seating is limited; for reservations, email goingtoofar@ccat.sas.upenn.edu or call the Center for East Asian Studies at 215-573-4203. For conference schedule, go to: www.bioethics.upenn.edu/goingtoofar.

The Hellenic University Club of Philadelphia presents the symposium, “Metropolis: Athens and Philadelphia” on May 1. Penn professors will examine the concept of metropolis by juxtaposing Greece’s classical city-state, Athens with Philadelphia, the most historic American city. Scholars will focus on government and democracy, architecture and city planning, athletics, stadium design and the Olympic Games, and the future of Philadelphia. The symposium runs from 10:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m. at the Penn Museum, 3260 South St. Admission $55, students with ID $35. Info: www.museum.upenn.edu or contact Billie P. Rorres at the Hellenic University Club at 610-896-5743.
