By the Numbers: Penn basketball

A new era of Penn basketball begins this year, as coach Glen Miller takes over Quaker basketball, replacing coach Fran Dunphy (see Q&A, Page 4). Miller inherits a program with great tradition and a history of winning,
as these numbers attest:

2

Number of Quakers who earned All-Big 5 honors last season. Guard Ibrahim Jaaber earned first-team honors and forward
Mark Zoller made second-team. Jaaber and Zoller, along with fellow senior Steve Danley, will lead a team that figures to
be the favorite to win yet another Ivy title.

6

Number of years that coach Chuck Daly led the Quakers in the early to mid-1970s. Name sound familiar? It should: Daly later enjoyed great success in the NBA, coaching in Cleveland, Detroit, New Jersey and Orlando.

1827

Total points scored between 1951 and 1953 by Ernie Beck, Penn’s all-time leading scorer.

93

Total points scored between 1951 and 1953 by Ernie Beck, Penn’s all-time leading scorer.

3/18/79

Date of what might be considered the greatest win in Penn history: A 64-62 win over St. John’s that sent Penn to the 1979
NCAA Final Four. Penn had earlier knocked off hoops powerhouses North Carolina and Syracuse before finally losing to
Michigan State and their star, a young playmaker named Magic Johnson, in the national semifinals.
