It's time to nominate Penn students, staff members or neighborhood residents involved in community service for a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Involvement Recognition Award. The award honors members of the Philadelphia region whose active service to others best exemplifies King's ideals. Nomination forms must be submitted by Friday, Dec. 8 for the award ceremony on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007. Forms may be submitted online at www.upenn.edu/aarc/mlk/award.
Stop by the Penn Bookstore (located at 3601 Walnut St.) Dec. 14 and get 15 to get 20 percent off all Penn Insignia merchandise and books—and take advantage of free gift wrapping, too. From 4 to 6 p.m., the Bookstore will be satisfying your sweet tooth, with complimentary hot chocolate, hot apple cider and holiday desserts. Go to www.upenn.edu/bookstore for a complete calendar of events.
West Philly neighbors and community groups are invited to lend a hand in a neighborhood leaf cleanup on Dec. 9. University City District will donate leaf bags and work gloves and haul away the collected leaves. The leaves are given to Fairmount Park, which uses the waste for leaf mulch. Last year, UCD removed more than 5,500 bags of leaves. For more information, or to sign up for the cleanup, contact John Fenton at firstname.lastname@example.org or 215-243-0555.
Gear up for winter
It may not be snowing yet—but there's a good chance that it will before winter is out. Plan ahead, and sign up for Snow Day Child Care. The program offers care for children when local schools are closed, and is available for children of Penn faculty and staff (12 weeks to 12 years). Snow Day Child Care is open weekdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Penn Children's Center at the Left Bank Commons, 3160 Chestnut St. Pre-enrollment is required. For more information, including enrollment instructions, contact Suzanne Smith at 215-898-5116 or go to: www.hr.upenn.edu/quality /worklife/snowday.asp.
