PennPraxis, the applied-research arm of the School of Design, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Founded by former PennDesign dean Gary Hack, PennPraxis aims to provide real-world opportunities for students to work on social and community issues through architecture, landscape architecture, city and urban planning, historic preservation, and fine arts.
Over the past 10 years, Praxis has involved more than 600 students in more than 60 projects that have ranged from envisioning a redevelopment of the Delaware River waterfront to outlining a plan to create 500 acres of new public green space for the City of Philadelphia. It also launched PlanPhilly.com, an online news site dedicated to Philadelphia’s built and planned environment.
