Burrison Gallery accepting artwork submissions

Burrison Gallery

Burrison Gallery

The Burrison Gallery is located inside the University Club on the second floor of The Inn at Penn.

Tucked inside the University Club at Penn in The Inn at Penn, the Burrison Gallery provides an intimate space to showcase the work of artists from the University and West Philadelphia communities. Past exhibitors include faculty members Rosemary Stevens, Hitoshi Nakazato, and Benjamin Pierce, staffer Bruce Montgomery, and faculty spouse Judy Gelles.

The Burrison Gallery is currently accepting submittals for future exhibitions. Penn faculty, staff, alumni, or their family members may submit works of art for consideration, such as photography, paintings, and multimedia pieces.

“Most of the works we look for are two-dimensional,” says Ilene Wilder, chair of the Burrison Gallery Advisory Committee. “Unfortunately, we don’t have the space to put sculptures or three-dimensional pieces that would be secure.”

Located on the second floor of The Inn at Penn, the Gallery covers the hallway near the Club’s entrance, and one wall of the Lenape Room, a separate private dining area.

Submittal packages should include slides, photos, or CDs of the pieces, a brief description of the work, such as medium and technique, as well as the artist’s bio, including his or her relationship to Penn. Artists who are selected will have a six-week, one-person show, with the option of an opening reception.

The Gallery features about seven exhibitions each year, including a summer show highlighting the art of University Club members, who submit one or two pieces to be included in a group exhibit.

“That works out nicely because people who are not necessarily professional artists, but maybe weekend artists, get a chance to show their work,” Wilder says.

This November, the Gallery will hold its first alumni group show during Homecoming Weekend.

“Not everyone is a football fanatic, so they can come back and have a connection to Penn in a different way,” says Wilder.

To submit a work of art to the Burrison Gallery, mail submittal packages to: Ilene Wilder, Chair, Burrison Gallery Advisory Committee, 3401 Walnut St., Suite 440A, Philadelphia, PA, 19104-6228.
