University President Amy Gutmann talks to accepted students and their families at a Penn Preview Day.

High school students deliberating where they will spend their undergraduate years should look no further than Penn, said President Amy Gutmann on April 10.

“You want to make a difference in the world, and we at Penn want to teach you how to do that,” said Gutmann, who made a surprise appearance at a Penn Preview Day for accepted students and their families.

Gutmann was introduced by Dean of Admissions Eric J. Furda—and cheered on by the Penn Quaker mascot—before speaking passionately to a packed Irvine Auditorium audience about the value of a University education. Penn is a special place, she told the crowd, because 12 different world-class schools sit in close proximity on a beautiful urban campus. Unique opportunities for undergraduate research and study abound, from labs to law school classrooms. “All of Penn is open to you,” Gutmann said.

The President also called the class of 2013, “the best class ever at the University of Pennsylvania.” Accepted students hail from all 50 states and 77 different countries.

Gutmann finished her talk by inviting students—and their families—to attend a fall open house at her home. “[Penn] is, to me, heaven on earth,” she said.
