The film “Buena Vista Social Club” turned a new generation of Americans on to the Latin rhythms of Cuban jazz. The band the movie made famous is coming to Penn for a one-night-only survey course in Cuba’s rich musical heritage.
The Afro-Cuban All Stars, led by Juan de Marcos González (photo), feature a multigenerational mix of musicians and a powerful horn section drawn from the famed Tropicana Orchestra. The 15-member big band that will perform on the Penn Presents stage April 18 offers the full range of Latin rhythms, from bolero to Afro-Cuban funk and beyond.
AFRO-CUBAN ALL STARS: Friday, April 18, at 8 p.m. in Zellerbach Theatre, Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St. Tickets $39, $34, $30 and $26; discounts for students, seniors and Penn affiliates available. Tickets/info: www.pennpresents.org or 215-898-3900.
