University President Amy Gutmann joined students at the April 15 opening of the exhibit, "Snapshots of Service: Penn Students Give Back."

The exhibit, “Snapshots of Service: Penn Students Give Back,” chronicles the work of student volunteers who spent spring break doing community service across the country and around the world. Penn President Amy Gutmann (pictured) joined students April 15 at the photo exhibit’s opening and congratulated them for their hard work and for embracing Penn’s tradition of civic engagement.

More than 320 Penn undergrads traveled to places as far away as Lublin, Poland, and Prague, Czech Republic. One group of students from the Fox Leadership Program spent the week in New Orleans, helping the city continue to rebuild and recover from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Others contributed to habitat conservation efforts in Florida and worked with a non-governmental organization in Yucatan, Mexico, to help villagers become more self-sufficient and less dependent on unpredictable climate conditions for an income.

The students’ photos from their Alternate Spring Break projects are on display through April 27 in the Fox Art Gallery in Claudia Cohen Hall.
