It has been nearly a year since I first wrote to you about how we at Penn were being affected by the economic downturn that continues to challenge businesses, governments and universities across the country. As we prepare to begin a new academic year, I want to update you on Penn's financial position and the outcome of decisions we have made during this economic recession.

In my December message to the Penn community, I outlined a series of cost-containment measures that the University is taking in response to the economic downturn. Today, I can report that as a result of these and other measures, Penn is continuing to move forward on our highest priorities under the Penn Compact.

Penn Announces Lowest Tuition Increase in 41 Years
February 26, 2009
Building on its historic, multi-year efforts to increase access and affordability for lower- and middle-income families, the University of Pennsylvania announced its smallest tuition increase in 41 years. The Budget and Finance Committee of Penn’s Board of Trustees approved a tuition increase of 3.75 percent for the 2009-10 academic year.

The University of Pennsylvania announced today that it remains firmly committed to making a Penn education affordable for students from all economic backgrounds regardless of the uncertain economic times.
