Book-Signing Series Kicks off

The first in a series of book signings by Penn authors debuted with Assistant Professor of English Toni Bowers' "The Politics of Motherhood," Thursday, Dec. 5.

Released this last summer, the book is a cultural history of ideals of virtuous motherhood in the 18th century. Bowers, who used a wide variety of primary sources ranging from engravings and portraits to novels and sermons, led a discussion that focused on how historians evaluate resources.

The Kings Court/English House Forum for Penn Authors, which aims to hold free sessions every two months, is an effort of the Kings Court Perspectives in Humanities Program. Another Perspectives effort is a daily after-school tutoring program to help a group of West Philadelhia students who lost their tutoring center when the Free Library at 40th and Walnut streets closed for renovations.
