Shaw Middle School eighth-graders involved in Penn's Workplace Mentoring Program spent Thursday as guests of Delta Upsilon fraternity for a Communiversity Day event. The students talked with President Judith Rodin and Community Relations Director Glenn Bryan before heading to classes with the DU brothers, eating lunch at 1920 Commons, touring the campus and visiting faculty and computer labs. The day ended with snacks and games at the DU house. This is the second year that DU has hosted West Philadelphia students as part of the ongoing Communiversity Day program, which aims at getting youth to start thinking about college by introducing them to campus life.

In another project to reach out to area school children, Penn's Delta Psi Fraternity hosted third graders from the Bache-Martin Elementary School speaking to Miss America 1997, Tara Holland, about the role reading plays in their lives. Information from the meeting, also held Thursday, will be reported to education and literacy organizations and to President Clinton's program to encourage literacy.
