A new award for "extraordinary contributions" to social justice was presented by the School of Social Work last week to Marian Wright Edelman, (second from left) C.B. Kimmins (right), Jeffrey D. Lobach (left) and Craig T. Trebilcock. Also pictured are Ira M. Schwartz, Dean of the School of Social Work (center) and Terrie Trebilcock (second from right) accepting an award for her husband.
Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, has been an advocate for disadvantaged Americans for her entire professional career. Kimmins is executive director and chief of staff of Mantua Against Drugs and heads C.B.'s Role Models, both in Philadelphia. Attorneys Jeffrey D. Lobach and Craig T. Trebilcock have provided pro bono advocacy for Chinese refugees from the freighter Golden Venture who were detained in York County Prison.
The award goes to people who, like the mother in Langston Hughes' poem "Mother to Son," have "the determination and commitment to bring light from the darkness and create for others a crystal staircase" to surmount life's difficulties, Schwartz said.
